Transom Bailers - David Perry
Edition 60 - Spring, 1976
As part of our report on transom bailers per proposed
rule change, we submit the enclosed photo of the prototypes on DS 7001
and a drawing of one of our openings with the maximums under the new proposal.
We have found our flaps to work very well and do not weaken the DS transom
or hull in the least. Our sealing system is quite waterproof when the flaps
are closed. However, in making the proposed specifications to the class,
we suggested dimensions that would allow owners to use other systems, such
as a round hole with half a rubber ball or other variations, but would
not allow sufficient material to be removed which would make the boat weak
and unsafe.
The intention of the bailers is to aid in self rescuing
and that they do. Simply releasing the retaining line allows the built-in
flotation to really do its job, and after a full swamping and righting,
less than 6" of water will remain in the boat. The boat does not need to
be moving forward for the flaps to work.
A midsummer capsize during a blowing spinnaker set quickly
proved their worth to us, after we righted the boat and sailed away without
assistance.
