The Day Sailer - Edition 63 - Winter 1976 - Wm. C. Waggoner
Now that Rule 4.53 permits any type of rudder head, we hurridly
sought to modify ours (if only to lighten the load on the aft).
After
delineating certain areas of the rudder head that did not really
add to the
strength (only weight), we drilled out the corners of the areas
and set to
work with a a sabre saw. Over three pounds of fiberglass and
resin came
out of the rudder head. (This is at the end of the boat, where
weight really
counts!) A little filing, a little sanding, and a little paint
(we use bathtub
epoxy paint) and we're back in business with virtually the same
strength, but
with much less weight (see figure 1).
